The movie element comes through beautiful aesthetics and rich scenery, as well as some of Hollywood's best talent: Denzel Washington (who is also the director) and Viola Davis. The play element is both strong and visible, the movie is dialogue packed, and takes place almost exclusively in the characters' house, not to mention most of the events happen within the span of a few days. There is a chance we will be known as the generation that perfected mixing the two mediums of movie and theater. This sets off a raucous, raunchy, and wildly entertaining ride. Why, oh why, did they choose academic success over partying, when, clearly, they could have had both? On their last day in high school, now here's a trope, they decide to make up for all the years of lost partying on one night. With excellent grades in their pockets, they head off to college only to find that the same in-crowd from high school that was doing nothing but partying, now goes to the same college as them. Molly (Beanie Feldstein, incidentally, Jonah Hill's younger sister) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) are best friends, class presidents, and academic overachievers. Like its two main characters, one could say it's a bit smarter than Greg Mottola's seminal bromedy. Yes, it's coming-of-age comedy, but, like Superbad, it tried something a little different. With Laia Costa giving an awe-striking lead performance, the high wire acting of the entire main cast only adds to this effect. The claustrophobic camerawork of cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grøvlen leaves the viewer feeling like a hapless accomplice to Victoria’s plight. What sounds like a standard-issue crime drama is, in fact, a staggering cinematic experiment.įilmed in one take, on location, and in real time, the movie’s production is indeed a gamble, but director Sebastian Schipper more than pulls it off.

Much like Berlin’s infamous nightlife, which serves as the backdrop to the plot, this daring German real-time drama will eat you up and spit you out.
